Help Us Find a Permanent Home!

The Museum is looking for a new permanent location.  Due to changes related to the renovation of the Barbourville Municipal Building, the Museum will not have the required space to operate fully from its prior location within the Municipal Building.  We are looking for a new location that will be fully dedicated to housing the Museum's considerable physical collections of artifacts and all of its genealogical research materials for the enjoyment and use of future generations.

The Knox Historical Museum, Inc. is a 501(c)-3 nonprofit organization that operates from the generous donations of patrons and from the sale of items like calendars, books, and other items from its Museum Store.

If you'd like to make a donation to help us with the expenses incurred for locating and securing a permanent location for the Museum, you may make a safe and secure online donation using our PayPal account by clicking on the Donate button below. You do not need to have a PayPal account to make a donation.

You may also make a donation by check. Please make your check payable to Knox Historical Museum and write 'Donation' in the memo line and mail it to:

The Knox Historical Museum continues as always to appreciate our generous donors for their gifts. Donors will be provided with a receipt of their donation and a huge thank you.

The Museum is Temporarily Closed

The Knox Historical Museum closed to the public March 31, 2023, temporarily, due to the Municipal Building, in which the museum is housed, having scheduled a complete renovation, including removal of all internal structures.

The museum has not closed as an institution and will continue research and genealogy services via e-mail and postal mail, but we are not permitted to have public traffic in our temporary facilities.

Knox Museum member David Cole, in conjunction with the Barbourville Tourism Commission, has published a brochure about paddling the Cumberland River in Knox County, Kentucky. Cole is a member of the Commission's adventure tourism initiative. This group coordinates the annual Cumberland River Challenge held each fall.

"See the old Boone Trace and other historic sites from a new perspective,"Cole said in making the announcement.

The Cumberland River flows roughly 34 miles through the heart of Knox County. The river enters from Bell County near the old Kentucky Utilities plant and exits to Whitley County at Gausdale, where the old Tye's Ferry once operated.

The river's passage includes includes paddling along such historic sites as Elys Hollow and the Old Boone Trace in the Flat Lick area; the "Big Bend"of the river where Barbourville was established in 1800; Dr. Thomas Walker's "first cabin" located near Swan Lake and McNeil's Crossing on Mackey Bend.

Cole's brochure focuses, however, on providing a usable map for canoe and kayak paddlers and includes specific information about primary access points and the paddling and driving distances between them.

These access points include the following:

  • Access A - Off KY 3085 beneath US 25E bridge
  • Access B - Off KY 3441 (Davis Bend Road)
  • Access C - Boat ramp, parking and camping at Thompson Park
  • Access D - Off Flat Creek Rd. (Granny Rose Hollow)
  • Access E - McNeil's Crossing with parking and camping
  • Access F - Off bridge on KY 779 at Gausdale

The brochure includes more detailed information about these access points and the paddling and driving distances involved.

See attached brochure pages for details. Brochures are also available at the Barbourville and Knox County Visitor Center at 117 High Street, Barbourville, KY 40906.
